Hella started out as a two-piece, and the best kind of two-piece at that: a totally mental one. Here, Zach Hill, self-taught drummer extraordinaire, goes frankly batshit all over the track underneath Spencer Seim's mathy, sometimes even understated guitar work. Hill has always been my main interest in regards to Hella, and his other releases ranges from work with Team Sleep to Marnie Stern. Aside from being self-taught, he also tunes down all his toms to make them sound like his kick-drum, subsequently making one of the most insane kit-sounds ever. The future of Hella seems to be unknown, although thankfully the band's been cut down from it's ill-fated furore into the realms of being a full-blown six-piece prog band, but Hold Your Horse Is is a true testament to some of the most insane, original, fucking loud music ever created by two mere mortals.
